For the Love of Five

Friday Five

Every once in a while, a book generates a lot of buzz. People start buying it, reading it, talking about it. In some cases, their lives are altered by the message it delivers.

For the Love: Fighting for Grace in a World of Impossible Standards by Jen Hatmaker is one of those books. It releases Tuesday, August 18. I have the privilege of serving on the launch team. For months, a group of 500 women and men have soaked in the grace and humor of Jen’s words. Now it is time to share some of those words with you!

In anticipation of the release of For the Love, this week’s #FridayFive are my favorite For the Love quotes (with a few great clips sprinkled in). Come back next week for more on the movement and the momentum surrounding this book.

For the Love of Five

Wise women know what to hold onto and what to release, and how to walk confidently in their choices–no regrets, no apologies, no guilt.

There is a biblical benchmark I now use. We will refer to this criterion for every hard question, big idea, topic, assessment of our own obedience, every “should” or “should not” and “will” or “will not” we ascribe to God, every theological sound bite. Here it is: If it isn’t also true for a poor single Christian mom in Haiti, it isn’t true.

If we tell the truth in the small things, our honesty is well-practiced when stuff gets dire. This creates a sincere community for which the earth is starving. In a world full of the fake, artificial, pretend, and superficial, we have the sustenance to nourish our starving hearts.

(On difficult people) You can’t pour antidote into poison forever and expect it t transform into something safe, something healthy. In some cases, poison is poison, and the only sane response is to quit drinking it. . . . You have permission to walk away from certain toxic relationships.

I hope our community is marked by grace and affirmation instead of defensiveness and exclusivity. . . . Ultimately, sisterhood is a soft place to land, and we can send each other out with full blessings knowing we can safely come home to one another. I want to be ever for you and you for me.
