Walking with you in the shadow of the cross is the thing that gets me out of bed before dawn. I most often write in the dark part of the morning, praying that the words here might propel you forward in the disciple’s journey. While my desire for this space is to encourage and equip you, I have a personal update and prayer request to share with you today about an upcoming mission trip.
During the month of January, our church participated in twenty-one days of prayer and fasting. It was my first time to experience this sacred spiritual discipline. My husband and I committed to the Daniel Fast, and I committed to pray expectantly and consistently for three weeks.
One item on my list was a medical mission trip to the Dominican Republic with Christian Medical Ministry of Alabama (CMMA). CMMA partners with SCORE International for this mission trip that allows physical and occupational therapy students to practice medicine under licensed therapists (that’s me!). We provide daily clinics in rural areas that include medical and spiritual care. The seed for this trip took root in my heart a few years ago, so I talked candidly with God about it during the fast.
On day twenty, I asked my husband if he thought this would be my year to go to Juan Dolio, DR to serve the people and the students. He easily consented, even with the obvious obstacles of childcare and financing. With my man’s support, I felt the full approval of God to say yes. So, at the end of April, I will join the medical missions team in the Dominican Republic!
I’m Going to the Dominican Republic!
Two things excite me about this trip. First, for the first time, I have the opportunity to use my training and experience as an OT to minister abroad. While I serve others in my job at my local hospital, going into communities without regular access to medical care is service at the next level. Meeting a physical need often opens the door to meet a spiritual need.
Second, this trip is an expression of The Great Commission. Jesus calls His followers to go and make disciples in all nations. The hunger for truth and hope is great in the Dominican Republic. Not only will I be in a position to share the hope found in Christ, I will also be able to model for the college students ways to incorporate spirituality into the care of patients.
Will You Join Me?
If you would like to support this team as we head to Juan Dolio, your prayers are most powerful. Pray for open hearts in those we serve in the clinic. Pray for the leaders, therapists, and students to have the strength of mind, body, and spirit. Finally, please pray for my family to thrive while I am away. They are so supportive and resilient, but things are sometimes a little harder while mama is gone.
I also appreciate prayer support for the financial aspect of this trip. Currently, my enthusiasm and commitment to the work of CMMA exceed my funding. I prayerfully look to God expectantly to supply all of my needs in order to fulfill this call to serve. If you would like to provide financial support for the work of CMMA, you can find donation information below.
Thank you for allowing me to share a little piece of my life with you!
I would love to hear about the next step in your journey. What is God calling you to do next? Can I pray for you too? Share in the comments or send an email to mrsdisciple (at) gmail. Let’s walk the disciple’s path together!
