Treasure Map to Wisdom

how to find wisdom

Treasure Map to Wisdom is part of an open letter to my children.

When I was a little girl, the idea of a treasure map excited me. My friends and I went so far as to create a treasure map to follow. We drew it out and then distressed the paper by crumpling it and tearing the edges to make it look legit.

The map had landmarks drawn out in Crayola. The big tree by the driveway. The pump house out back. The hedge line on the hill. We only had to follow the directions which were clearly marked by a red dotted line, starting at the front door and ending with a big X.

There was not buried treasure at the X. At least not gold. Maybe some Smarties in a sandwich bag (which is a treasure to a little girl!). But, we pursued it with intensity as if there were gold at the end of the search.

Solomon gives us a treasure map in the book of Proverbs. He tells us to search for insight and understanding “as you would for lost money or hidden treasure” (Proverbs 2:4). That sounds like the beginning of a legit treasure map to me.

God’s Word is our treasure map for life. It is full of directions for each decision you will face. While it may not be as specific as my crayon markings, the Bible provides guidelines that will help you make the right decision. Listen to Solomon’s wise words:

He guards the paths of justice and protects those who are faithful to him.
Then you will understand what is right, just, and fair, and
you will know how to find the right course of action every time.
For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will fill you with joy.
Wise planning will watch over you. Understanding will keep you safe.
Proverbs 2:8-11, NLT (emphasis added)

What will we find buried under the X? Solomon says, “You will understand what it means to fear the Lord, and you will gain knowledge of God” (Proverbs 2:5). Although that may not sound like buried treasure to you right now, I assure you, it is pure gold!

Every day of your life you will have decisions to make. Some are easy, like which cereal to eat for breakfast. Others will be monumentally hard, like what college to attend or who you will marry. Start following the treasure map now while you are young. It will keep you on the right path, protected by faith and the hand of God.

Consult the map of God’s Word when you can’t decide which way to go. It will lead you strait to the X. And we all know, X marks the spot!
