Every good story has a bad guy and a hero. The badder the guy and the gooder the hero, the better the story. We can get lost in the action of good versus evil. A good sword fight is thrilling as we see the hero dominate with acrobatics and a shining blade. Girl dramas pit the popular mean girl against the quiet good girl. We love to see that mean girl get what is coming to her at the homecoming dance while our hero gets the cute boy.
Your life is a great story. It is a good versus evil fight every day. Imagine the good guy sitting on one shoulder, reminding you of all the things you know to be true and right. On the other shoulder sits the bad guy, distracting you from the truth and making the bad look oh so good.
Solomon knew the makings of a good story. He gives us a hero. Her name is Wisdom. The bad guy is a master of disguise. Sometimes he looks like a friend asking you to do something you know is wrong. Other times he may come disguised as a screen, tempting you to click on something that will lead you down a dark path.
Wisdom will save you from evil people,
from those whose speech is corrupt.
These people turn from right ways
to walk down dark and evil paths.
They rejoice in doing wrong,
and they enjoy evil as it turns things upside down.
What they do is crooked,
and their ways are wrong.
Proverbs 2:12-15, NLT
The bad guy makes it look so fun. Sin can be fun but only for a little while. The road you take when you follow the bad guy is dangerous. It twists and turns through the dark, leading you to pain, consequences, and eventually death.
Cue the hero music! Here she comes! Wisdom offers a way out, a way for good to conquer evil.
Follow the steps of good men instead,
and stay on the paths of the righteous.
For only the upright will live in the land,
and those who have integrity will remain in it.
But the wicked will be removed from the land,
and the treacherous will be destroyed.
Proverbs 2:20-22, NLT
Wisdom tells you to find friends who are walking down the right path. She pairs you with people she has rescued before. She knows it is easier to stay on the right pathway with a friend. Fight evil together like Batman and Robin. Encourage each other like Snow White and the Dwarfs. Bring out the best in each other like Liv and Maddie.
How will your story end? You get to decide the ending. Will you follow the bad guy, dressed in all of his disguises? Or will you let Wisdom save the day?
God, give us eyes to see evil in all of his disguises. Please send Wisdom to save me from following the wrong people down the wrong path. Send good friends to walk with me so that we can help each other make the wise choices. Amen.
